We are looking forward to seeing you in August for NAMA's annual foray at Paul Smith’s College in Upstate New York. Nestled in the Adirondacks and sitting on a beautiful lake, Paul Smith’s campus is a beautiful setting for our weekend stay. We have a good lineup of speakers and foray locations. We will be posting details as we gather them.

Introduction to Mushroom Dyeing Workshop with Susan Hopkins (12 places)
Cost is $100.00
Thursday Aug 8, 2019 | 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
This workshop will be a hands-on introduction to the best species of fungi to use and general procedure for dyeing wool yarn a variety of colors. We will use small wool yarn skeins that have been pre-mordanted with alum (potassium aluminum sulfate) or iron (ferrous sulfate) or no mordant. These will be cooked together with dried mushrooms broken into small pieces in half gallon mason jars placed in large hot water bath pots. Each participant can expect to receive 20-24 or more short yarn samples dyed from 8-10 different species of fungi as well as one silk scarf. All materials and equipment will be provided plus several handouts on mushroom dyeing included in the fee of $100.00 per person. Please note that this workshop will be held on Thursday before the main foray starts with dinner Thursday evening. Location will be provided upon registration. If you are signing up for the Dyeing workshop you will probably want to register fro Wednesday Dinner-Sunday Breakfast as you need to be ready to go Thursday Morning and will want breakfast and lunch on Thursday.
Chemical/Reagent Workshop led by John Plischke III (30 places)

Learn about all the chemicals we use to effectively use microscopy for identification. The fee covers supplies to make your own chemicals.
Cultivating Hericium and Making Tinctures with John Michelotti and Olga Tzogas (23 places)

You will make your own tincture to take home. TRANSPORTATION
The closest airports are Albany, NY (about a 2 hour 50 minute drive to Paul Smith’s) and the Montreal airport (which is about 2 hours away). You can also fly into Burlington, VT (about a 2 hour 15 minute drive). Cape Air has flights from Boston to Lake Saranac three times a day. The airfare is about $129 each way. If you fly, you will need to rent a car; we suggest contacting friends to see about sharing a vehicle.
Trailways has bus service from Albany to Paul Smith’s that costs $44 and takes about 4 and a half hours. HOUSING AND REGISTRATION
We have several campus housing options for you to choose from:Tier 1 Rooms
are in the Lydia Martin Smith Hall. These rooms have two beds in them with the bathrooms down the hall. These are the most affordable rooms. This dormitory is not
air conditioned. The cost for this option with a room shared with one other person for the standard Thursday dinner - Sunday breakfast
with registration is $340. We have 50 of these rooms available. Tier 2 Rooms
are in Hillside Hall. The rooms have two beds but have a shared bathroom with one other room with two people sharing the connecting bathroom. This dormitory is not
air conditioned. The cost for the standard Thursday dinner - Sunday Breakfast
with registration is $355. We have 24 of these rooms available. Tier 3 Rooms
are in Lower St. Regis Hall and Upper Saint Regis Hall. These rooms are apartment type rooms with two private bathrooms , a small kitchen and sitting area and four private bedrooms (one person per bedroom). This would be a great situation for 2 couples to share or 4 friends. These dorms are air conditioned. The cost for the standard Thursday Dinner - Sunday Breakfast
with registration is $400. We have 24 of these rooms available.
We also have 22 Tier 3 Rooms
in Overlook with the same room set up of 4 separate bedrooms with a shared lounge and kitchen and 2 private bathrooms. This dorm is air conditioned.COMMUTER REGISTRATION

If you do not want to share a room or bathroom there are several hotels located 10.7 miles away in Lake Saranac. It will be prime summer vacation season so you will want to book early and they won’t be cheap. The most expensive will be Hotel Saranac, Curio Collection by Hilton,
followed by Best Western Saranac Lake,
least expensive is the Sara Placid Inn & Suites.
You can look all these up on Tripadvisor or Orbitz or Kayak.
There is on-site camping in the Alumni Campground
. There are 22 Tent sites available at $5 per night. These are primitive sites with no utilities and only pit toilets. Campers can use the bathrooms and shower facilities in the Buxton Gymnasium. You can check them out at and reserve at this website
. Once you have reserved and paid for your campsite you can register for the Foray as a commuter. One tent per campsite but you can fit numerous people in you tent.
There are private and public campgrounds near Paul Smith’s, such as the Lake Saranac Public Campground. Campsites cost $22 a night for New York residents and $27 for out-of-state campers, which is not much cheaper than the lowest cost room at Paul Smith’s. There is also Fish Creek Pond State Park. The camp sites cost the same as Lake Saranac. FOOD AND SOCIALS
We will be eating in the school cafeteria and so expect good, reasonably healthy college food. The Tier 3 rooms do have kitchens; if you have a special food needs that require you to prepare your own food this would be a good option.
Food at socials will be provided by the campus catering service. Drinks will be available at a cash bar. PAY BY CHECK OPTION
If you choose the “Pay by check” option please make sure we receive your check within 14 days. If not, we will cancel your registration and send you an email notifying you. CANCELLATION POLICY
Cancellation within 30 days of August 8, you will receive a full refund minus a $25 handling fee.
Cancellation within 14 days of August 8, you will receive a full refund minus a $75 handling fee.
If there is no waiting list and the cancellation is within 14 days of the foray, there will be no refund depending on the reason for the cancellation…Each case will be considered.
These fees are per person, so for a couple canceling please double the handling fees.
