At what time of the day?In the morning, when the sun comes out. (They warm up.) Or a little before darkness. Some birds at dusk or at night, but most not at noon, not at night.Any time
Can you take them in your hand to identify them?Never, except when dead.Yes, except when they are too high in a tree, too far, or on the other side of the river.
Can you tell them by their sound?They sing, they call. This helps to spot them. It also enables you to identify them without seeing them.No sound

Do you have to have good eyes to see them?Yes, and also binoculars and telescopes.No, except when they are very high or very far. You may need a microscope to identify them.
